The Story Behind The Fry Index

An illustration of the inspiration behind the Fry Index, smiling in tortoiseshell glasses and holding up a single french fry.

It all started with a classic household dilemma: “What do you want to watch?”

When my wife and I started our weekly movie nights, we realized we were spending more time endlessly scrolling than actually watching anything. To fix this, we created a new system. We each chose 30 movies, threw all 60 titles into a hat, and let fate decide our feature presentation.

Drawing from the hat solved the indecision, but simply watching the movies wasn’t quite enough. We wanted to rate them, but standard star ratings felt a little too boring for our movie nights. We wanted something fun, something unique, and most importantly, something inspired by my wife’s absolute favorite thing: french fries.

For her, the ultimate measure of a perfect fry is its crispiness. That simple truth became the foundation of The Fry Index.

We adopted a fast-food sizing theme to create a 6-point scale with one critical rule: there is no middle ground. You can’t just be neutral on a movie. It forces you to make a choice—a movie is either crispy (good) or soggy (bad). From there, you just have to decide what size it is.

We loved using this system so much that we wanted to share it with other movie lovers to bring a little more fun to their watchlists.

A shared menu

Before the site, it was an iOS Shortcut — one tap, pick a fry, done — and the site is the rest of that idea. Your reviews aren’t filed away in your own account; they go up on the menu, where the average is whatever everyone who’s watched it actually thought. You get one fry per film, and you can change it whenever you like. Nobody gets to vote twice for something they loved.

What you can do here

  • Rate on the Fry Index. One fry per film or show, from Large Soggy to Large Crispy.
  • Add your dips. The fry says how good it was; dips say how it felt. Twenty sauces, from Ranch to Malt Vinegar.
  • Daily Trivia. One film or TV question a day. Keep your streak going and earn badges.
  • The Weekly Fry-Off. Two films or two shows head to head, one vote each, a new matchup every Monday. Once a month, a film takes on a show.
  • Your watchlist. Bag films and shows for later and pick the crispiest when you’re ready.
  • Watch parties. Rate films and shows with friends and see your table’s own Fry Index.

What we leave out

No half-fries. No weighted scores, no critic tier, no algorithm deciding which verdict counts for more. The boundary between two fries sits at .75 rather than .5, which is the one piece of arithmetic here — a film has to properly earn the next fry up rather than rounding into it.

Meet Chip & Dudley

A retro film poster: Chip and Dudley, two fry-box cops, in “Sauced and Loaded.” Chip is crisp and grinning with a salt shaker; Dudley is limp, damp and holding a mustard bottle.
Now showing. Not really.

Chip

Crispy

The fry box on every page. He runs the counter, asks the trivia questions, fights in the Fry-Off and takes the complaints — in whatever costume the job calls for.

Dudley

Soggy

Chip’s co-star, and the only fry in the kitchen who has never once been crispy. Limp, damp, and doing his best.

Still in the fryer

Dips are next: a few quick picks to add to a review, on top of the fry. Seasoning Levels and Rewatchability are written down and not built. They’ll turn up when they’re ready and not before.

Got a complaint, a correction, or a film or show we’ve got badly wrong?

A Dedication

This entire project exists because of my incredible wife. She is the inspiration behind the index, the ultimate judge of crispiness, and the love of my life. Even if she thinks I’m a little crazy for taking our movie night game this far, this site is dedicated to her—a small piece of her legacy on the internet.
